American Craft Forum: Forward Motion

Join this digital conversation with artists and maker communities who put care at the center of their practice and offer insights into where we go from here and how craft can take us there.

Marking one year of living under the shadow of a global pandemic, we’re taking an opportunity to pause, to look around us, to reflect. The difficulties we have all grappled with this year have amplified fissures in our society’s concept of care. Reflecting on this pivotal moment, we ask how craft can comfort us and move us from a crisis of care to a culture of care. Craft, we know, makes care tangible—through our physical relationship to materials, and through the movements and gestures of making. And, craft was made to meet moments like these, connecting us to ourselves, the land, and our shared humanity.

Cultivating Closeness: Live Workshop for MN Humanities Center #HumanitiesToGo

This Thursday I’ll be joining the Minnesota Humanities Center on Facebook Live for a short creative workshop on the theme of ‘Cultivating Closeness’ in a time of physical distancing.

Humanities to Go: Featuring Shanai Matteson

Join artist and cultural organizer Shanai Matteson (Water Bar & Public StudioRaft) for this short #HumanitiesToGo workshop via Facebook Live. From her home studio, Matteson will ask the question, “How can we continue to deepen connections with our nearby neighbors during this time of physical distancing?” This will be a fun, uplifting session inviting participants to create something for their neighbors in observance of May Day and the return of spring. This craft will utilize simple materials that most people should be able to find at home or outside nearby. A materials list and instructions will be posted for those who want to do the activity on their own following this live session.

Leveraging Arts and Storytelling to Advance Awareness of Water Resource Issues

I will be co-leading a special session at the annual Minnesota Water Resources Conference. This session, inspired by our Water Bar ‘Water Tending School’ workshop, will feature artists, local water resource professionals and community activists in conversation about the ‘how’ and ‘why’ of collaborations for water.

From the Water Resource Conference website:

“Stretch your professional skills in this experiential and PowerPoint-free special session. Led by the artists and storytellers of Water Bar & Public Studio, this session will explore how the use of arts and cultural storytelling strategies in water resources outreach can help to create lasting awareness and positive action. Attendees will gain greater understanding and skills in facilitating art/ storytelling by listening and engaging with the MN arts community.”
